    Regional disparities and investment-cash flow sensitivity: Evidence from Chinese listed firms

    In China, regional disparities are important. We examine the difference in the sensitivity of investment to cash flow between firms in inland regions and those in coastal regions. By using the financial data of Chinese listed firms, we found that firms in inland regions rely more on their internal funds in terms of their investment activities than those in coastal regions and that the sensitivity gap between inland and coastal firms widened in the recent contractionary monetary policy period. This suggests that firms in inland regions are harder to obtain outside funds due to unfavorable social and economic environments for inland firms. Our findings suggest that capital markets in China respond rationally to the potential impact of regional disparities on a firm’s performance.sensitivity of investment to cash flow; sensitivity gap; regional disparities; Chinese economy

    SummaryBackgroundSecretions within the adult female reproductive tract mediate sperm survival, storage, activation, and selection. Drosophila female reproductive gland secretory cells reside within the adult spermathecae and parovaria, but their development remains poorly characterized.ResultsWith cell-lineage tracing, we found that precursor cells downregulate lozenge and divide stereotypically to generate three-cell secretory units during pupal development. The NR5A-class nuclear hormone receptor Hr39 is essential for precursor cell division and secretory unit formation. Moreover, ectopic Hr39 in multiple tissues generates reproductive gland-like primordia. Rarely, in male genital discs these primordia can develop into sperm-filled testicular spermathecae.ConclusionDrosophila spermathecae provide a powerful model for studying gland development. Hr39 functions as a master regulator of a program that may have been conserved throughout animal evolution for the production of female reproductive glands and other secretory tissues

    Disulfide Bonds in the Ectodomain of Anthrax Toxin Receptor 2 Are Required for the Receptor-Bound Protective-Antigen Pore to Function

    BACKGROUND: Cell-surface receptors play essential roles in anthrax toxin action by providing the toxin with a high-affinity anchor and self-assembly site on the plasma membrane, mediating the toxin entry into cells through endocytosis, and shifting the pH threshold for prepore-to-pore conversion of anthrax toxin protective antigen (PA) to a more acidic pH, thereby inhibiting premature pore formation. Each of the two known anthrax toxin receptors, ANTXR1 and ANTXR2, has an ectodomain comprised of an N-terminal von Willebrand factor A domain (VWA), which binds PA, and an uncharacterized immunoglobulin-like domain (Ig) that connects VWA to the membrane-spanning domain. Potential roles of the receptor Ig domain in anthrax toxin action have not been investigated heretofore. METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: We expressed and purified the ANTXR2 ectodomain (R2-VWA-Ig) in E. coli and showed that it contains three disulfide bonds: one in R2-VWA and two in R2-Ig. Reduction of the ectodomain inhibited functioning of the pore, as measured by K(+) release from liposomes or Chinese hamster ovary cells or by PA-mediated translocation of a model substrate across the plasma membrane. However, reduction did not affect binding of the ectodomain to PA or the transition of ectodomain-bound PA prepore to the pore conformation. The inhibitory effect depended specifically on reduction of the disulfides within R2-Ig. CONCLUSIONS/SIGNIFICANCE: We conclude that disulfide integrity within R2-Ig is essential for proper functioning of receptor-bound PA pore. This finding provides a novel venue to investigate the mechanism of anthrax toxin action and suggests new strategies for inhibiting toxin action

    Influence of male surgical sterilization on the copulatory behavior and reproduction of Brandt\u27s vole

    The influence of sterilized male on the copulatory behavior and reproduction of Brandt′s vole was studied by using the method of surgical sterilization. Male surgical sterilization did not influence the copulatory behavior of Brandt\u27s vole. Mating times with intact mates and litter size of female Brandt′s voles in male sterilized groups decreased compared with the control groups. The results supported the hypothesis of competitively reproductive interference of sterilized males. Thus, sterilization can be a viable method to control voles

    Influence of increasing number of mating partners on mating behaviour and reproduction in Brandt’s voles

    The influence of increasing number of mating partners on the copulatory behavior and reproduction in Brandt’s voles (Microtus brandti) was studied. Compared with the control group of 1 ♂ + 1 ♀, our results showed when increasing only female partners, the mating opportunity was increased in males while decreased in female in the treatment group of 1 ♂ + 2 ♀♀; the mating opportunity of male and female were both decreased significantly in the treatment group of 1 ♂ + 3 ♀♀. When increasing only male partners, male mating opportunity in treatment groups 2 ♂♂ + 1 ♀ and 3 ♂♂+ 1 ♀ decreased significantly while no change was significant in females in both treatment groups. When increasing the number of male and female partners simultaneously in the treatment group of 2 ♂♂ + 2 ♀♀, the mating opportunity for both males and females was decreased significantly. Comparing with the control, the mean litter size in all five-treatment groups lessened significantly and female pregnancy rate dropped significantly if they copulated less than five times. From these results, we have demonstrated a significant reproductive interference due to mate competition in Brandt’s voles and thus, competitively reproductive interference may be an important behavioral mechanism in regulating population density in this rodent species. However, due to possible laboratory artifacts, we still need further study, especially in the field, to validate our results

    Understanding User’s Switching Intention on Mobile Payment Platforms

    With the development of mobile payment (m-payment) service, the competition accordingly increases among m-payment market. Users face multiple choices when adopting m-payment services. It is critical for both scholars and m-payments providers to understand what the underlying factors can influence user’s switching from one incumbent m-payment platform to another. To solve this question, we employ a push-pull-mooring (PPM) framework to build the research model. We propose that user’s dissatisfaction on incumbent m-payment provider is the main push factor for user’s switching. The attractiveness of alternative and peer influence are the pull factors influencing user’s switching. Cognitive lock-in, as the mooring factor, could influence switching intention directly. Additionally, we posit that cognitive lock-in can moderate the effects of both push and pull factors on user’s switching intention. This study will use survey methodology and structural equation modelling approach to test the hypotheses

    The effect of male competition on female choice in the Brandt’s vole (Lasiopodomys brandti) was studied in the laboratory. Using a two-way choice test, we showed that when males did not compete, estrous females preferred and mated with the dominant males, but non-estrous females preferred subordinate males. However, when males competed, all dominant males gained the priority to mate, and the amicable behaviour between males, regardless of their dominant status, and between non-estrous females increased, compared with the behaviour between males and the estrous females. These results showed that interactions among Brandt’s voles were not only influenced by male competition but also by reproductive status of female voles
